Upper Elementary Program Overview
AISU’s Guiding Philosophy is to realize that in each child is a genius with unique talents and abilities. Personalized learning is the key to unlocking each student’s academic potential. Learning to do and learning to be are just as important as learning to know.
Everything we do at AISU is an appendage of our culture. Perhaps the most important thing we do to prepare our students for the year, and the rest of their lives, happens during the first 6 weeks of school. During this time, students are engaged in learning their core subjects, but they are also engaged in a broad range of activities that set the culture of the school.
A Hero’s Journey: Teachers work with students individually to help them discover their passions and to see academic challenges in the context of their life’s journey.
Ownership: AISU students are trained to take responsibility for their own learning through goal setting, and they help create their classroom learning environment.
Teamwork: Students bonded together, become each others champions. They encourage and support each other as they push beyond their comfort zones to develop new skills. They also work collaboratively on teams allowing them to develop such skills as leadership, project management and collaboration.
Excellence: Students gain confidence and self respect when they produce quality work. At AISU students push the boundaries of their capabilities, and produce quality work. At ASIU, students push the boundaries of their capabilities, and produce quality work.
Critical Thinking: Students are taught how to think independently, and engage in civil discourse.
Resilience: As students push through their current abilities, they at times stumble. Our job is to celebrate these movements as an opportunity for growth.
Students at AISU are self driven to work at the boundary of their potential. They are not content to work in lock – step with other students of varying skills and abilities. They long to be unleashed to move forward at a pace that maximizes their potential. That is where technology comes into play at AISU. By adaptive, online software, AISU can deliver a personalized learning environment for each student. This enables students to move at their own pace, mastering the required content. This frees up the teacher to deliver small group instruction with the help of hands-on materials and other resources.
Students work independently or in small learning groups for part of the day developing their core skills, the remainder of the day they are working on projects. These projects are designed to show students that the core skills they are learning are essential to completing real life projects, and how the diversity of skills and intelligence within their school community creates value.
